Modeling of mechanical relaxation and phonons in moire materials

Abstract: Mechanical relaxation and phonons are known to play important roles in the remarkable properties of moire materials such as twisted bilayer graphene. I will present atomic-scale mathematical formulations of relaxation and phonons in terms of interatomic potentials and then prove the convergence of these formulations to commonly-used continuum PDE models. The formulation allows for rigorous error estimates and systematic calculation of corrections.
