The dynamics of changes in extreme precipitation in different regions and seasons

Abstract: Extreme precipitation is increasing in intensity with global warming, but the rate of increase is projected to vary across different seasons and regions because of changes in the winds associated with the extreme precipitation events. In this talk, I will discuss progress on understanding this dynamical contribution to changes in precipitation extremes.  One area of focus will be the relatively weak increase in precipitation extremes projected over many regions of North America and Europe in summer, and whether this is related to decreases in relative humidity over land.  I will also more briefly discuss the case of snowfall extremes and how the response of extreme precipitation depends on the return period considered.
